Dormition Fast Begins July 31, 2026 Across Romania
On Friday, 31 July 2026, the Orthodox Church in Romania began the two‑week Postul Adormirii Maicii Domnului (Dormition Fast), which will run until the eve of the Dormition feast on 14 August. The fast prepares the faithful for the major celebration of the Dormition of the Mother of God on 15 August.
During the fast, consumption of animal products – meat, eggs, dairy and related foods – is prohibited. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays believers observe a stricter fast, eating only dry food until the ninth hour (≈15:00). Tuesdays and Thursdays allow boiled vegetables without oil, while Saturdays and Sundays permit oil and wine. The only day when fish is permitted is 6 August, the feast of the Transfiguration (Schimbarea la Față a Domnului).
Clergy encourage additional spiritual practices: daily prayers such as the Paraclis and Akathist of the Mother of God, confession, charitable deeds, and avoidance of festive events. Local dioceses have organized pilgrimages with the miraculous icon of the Mother of God from the Adam Monastery, visiting numerous parishes throughout the August period.
