Romania birth rates show long-term decline despite seasonal peaks
Official statistics from the National Institute of Statistics indicate significant fluctuations and a long-term downward trend in Romania's birth rates. In July 2026, approximately 13,500 birth certificates were registered, representing a decrease of over 4% compared to the same month the previous year.
While monthly figures show some variation, the broader demographic trend shows a decline. Over the last decade, the number of monthly newborns has dropped by nearly 33%, falling from over 20,000 to approximately 13,500. This trend highlights a deepening negative natural growth rate.
Data also shows seasonal peaks in births. In September 2025, over 14,600 children were born, a 4.8% increase from the previous month. Experts suggest this peak correlates with a rise in conceptions during the late December holiday season, influenced by psychological factors and family gatherings.
