Romania budget deficit drops to 2.89% of GDP
Romania's consolidated general budget deficit for the first eight months of 2026 reached 59.42 billion lei. This represents a nominal reduction of approximately 31% compared to the 86.36 billion lei deficit recorded during the same period in 2025.
As a percentage of GDP, the deficit fell to 2.89%, down from 4.51% in the first eight months of 2025. This improvement of 1.62 percentage points is attributed to ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts. During this period, total revenues grew by 11.4%, reaching 468.10 billion lei, while total expenditures increased by only 4.2%.
Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare stated that the budget execution confirms the effectiveness of adopted measures. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a prudent approach, noting that revenue growth is significantly outpacing expenditure growth, supported by European funds and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Nazare highlighted that spending discipline and strict prioritization remain essential due to limited fiscal space and external economic factors.
