Romania car market shows strong preference for grey and neutral tones
Data from the Romanian Auto Registry for 2025 indicates a strong consumer preference for neutral car colors in Romania. For new vehicles, grey is the most popular choice with over 102,000 registrations, followed by white with approximately 66,000 units. Blue, black, and red follow with similar figures between 30,000 and 33,000 each.
In the second-hand market, grey remains the leader with over 170,000 vehicles, though black is rising in popularity, reaching over 127,000 units and surpassing white. These trends align with global patterns where white, black, and grey account for over three-quarters of all vehicles produced.
When changing a vehicle's color, owners must legally update their vehicle identity documents through the Romanian Auto Registry (RAR). The process requires an appointment and the presentation of original identification and vehicle documents. For automotive refurbishment projects, color choice is a strategic decision that affects a vehicle's perceived value, maintenance ease, and functionality, such as using earthy tones for off-road vehicles to better mask dirt and wear.
