Romania Chamber of Deputies adopts new traffic rules for motorcyclists

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies has adopted a legislative project as a decision-making body that introduces significant changes to the Road Code for motorcycles and mopeds. The new regulations aim to improve urban traffic fluidity and provide clearer rules for two-wheeled vehicles.

Key provisions include allowing motorcyclists to advance alongside columns of vehicles stopped at red lights or railway barriers, provided they maintain a safe lateral distance and do not exceed a speed of 20 km/h. The law also introduces a three-meter safety space in front of stop lines at signaled intersections and level crossings, allowing riders to position themselves ahead of car columns.

Additionally, the project permits motorcycles and mopeds to use public transport lanes, subject to specific conditions set by local road administrators. The legislation also encourages the creation of dedicated motorcycle parking spaces in public parking lots with more than six spaces. While proponents argue these measures will reduce congestion, some lawmakers have raised concerns regarding road safety, specifically regarding speed limits, safety distances, and the impact on public transport passengers and pedestrians.
