Romania: CNSAS documents reveal 1980s hardships and collaborator ties

Newly released documents from the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) provide insight into the economic hardships and social realities of Romania during the 1980s under the Ceaușescu regime. Intelligence notes describe severe food shortages, including long queues for meat and empty store shelves. Despite official propaganda claiming agricultural success, the documents reveal a failing agricultural sector characterized by a lack of investment, fuel, and spare parts, often relying on manual labor or animal traction.

Additionally, CNSAS records identify former Romanian U21 national team coach Emil Săndoi as a former collaborator with the Securitate. According to the files, Săndoi signed an agreement in October 1985 under the code name ‘Eugen’. The documents state he was monitored starting in the summer of 1985 and characterized by neighbors as a respectful and sociable individual. When contacted regarding the findings, Săndoi stated he did not remember the collaboration.
