Romania completes new Tulcea arena and revamps Craiova’s Oblemenco stadium

The new multipurpose arena near the Danube in Tulcea, nicknamed the “UFO,” is now in its final phase ahead of an inauguration scheduled for later this month. Estimated at about €25 million, the venue will hold 4,670 spectators, feature a main competition hall, a sub‑ground training court, underground parking and press facilities. It will host the Division B European U‑18 women’s basketball championship from 31 July to 9 August, expecting over 1,000 participants and delegations from 20 European nations. Construction was delayed by water‑infiltration challenges due to the site’s proximity to the river.

In Craiova, the playing surface of the Ion Oblemenco stadium has been completely replaced in just 40 days. The upgrade, carried out by Sports Fields Romania, uses Permavoid geocellular technology for rapid drainage, controlled water retention and air circulation, together with underground aeration, heating and automated irrigation systems. The new pitch is ready for the club’s first Champions League preliminary match against ML Vitebsk on 15 July, marking Craiova’s return to the competition after more than three decades.
