Romania confronts Pfizer debt enforcement as ROMATSA faces funding crisis
Romania is being pursued for more than 3.4 billion lei (about €660 million) owed to Pfizer after the state failed to pay for 29 million vaccine doses. Pfizer has initiated a forced‑execution procedure through EUROCONTROL, which has frozen ROMATSA’s accounts and threatens the air‑navigation regulator’s ability to operate beyond the next 6–8 weeks.
Interim Transport Minister Radu Miruță said the regulator can continue normal services for now but may need budget support or a settlement with Pfizer. The government intends to contest the enforcement action in a Belgian court while negotiations with the pharma company continue. AUR senator Petrișor Peiu criticised the government, noting that penalties of €2 million per month are accruing and accusing the ruling parties of mismanaging the contract.
