Romania considers fines for beach safety violations amid red flag warnings

Lifeguards on the Romanian coast have issued red flag warnings, prohibiting swimming due to heavy waves and strong currents. In areas such as Eforie and Jupiter, lifeguards reported over 100 interventions in a single week to rescue tourists who ignored safety warnings.

In response to the increasing number of dangerous incidents, including a fatality involving two brothers at Olimp, a new bill is being considered in the Romanian Parliament. The proposed legislation aims to introduce fines for those who violate safety protocols. Under the proposal, individuals who ignore lifeguard warnings could face fines of up to 1,500 lei. The penalty doubles to 3,000 lei for those who refuse to exit the water after being instructed to do so. Additionally, the bill seeks to penalize parents who leave children unsupervised in the water, with fines also reaching up to 3,000 lei.
