Romania considers mandatory health education for all students
A proposal has been made to introduce health education as a mandatory subject in the Romanian school system, spanning from kindergarten through the end of high school. Horațiu-Remus Moldovan, president of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), advocates for a continuous and solid curriculum rather than an optional course or one limited to specific grade levels.
A key component of the proposal is the professionalization of instruction. Moldovan suggests that the subject should not be taught by classroom teachers, physical education instructors, or mathematics teachers, but rather by medical professionals, such as doctors and nurses. This approach aims to model successful systems seen in Nordic countries.
The initiative is currently undergoing parliamentary procedures. Proponents argue that such a curriculum would improve public awareness regarding immunization and disease prevention, ultimately reducing long-term healthcare expenditures within the social health insurance system.
