Romania considers mandatory school uniforms to combat bullying

A legislative proposal in Romania aims to make school uniforms mandatory for students in the state education system. The initiative, which seeks to amend the Pre-university Education Law, recently received a favorable opinion from the Senate's Committee for Public Administration.

Proponents of the bill, including PSD deputy Alexandra Presura, argue that a unified dress code could combat bullying and reduce discrimination based on the socio-economic status of families. The project aims to foster a sense of community and equality among students.

While the initiative seeks to address social inequalities, it faces opposition from the Economic and Social Council (CES), which issued a negative opinion. The proposal includes provisions for state subsidies or free basic kits for vulnerable families and disadvantaged environments to mitigate the financial burden on households. The bill must still complete the full parliamentary procedure before it can be implemented.
