Romania considers mandatory school uniforms to reduce discrimination
A legislative proposal to make school uniforms mandatory in Romanian state educational institutions is advancing through the Senate. The initiative, supported by members of the Social Democratic Party, seeks to amend pre-university education laws to require students to wear uniforms. Under the proposal, individual school boards would determine specific uniform models after consulting with parents and students. To mitigate financial burdens, the project allows for local authority contributions and suggests that basic uniform kits could be provided free of charge or subsidized for students from vulnerable or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Proponents, including Senator Alexandra Presură, argue that mandatory uniforms could reduce bullying and discrimination related to students' socioeconomic status. However, the Economic and Social Council issued a negative opinion, with critics arguing that uniforms do not eliminate social disparities, as differences remain visible through footwear, technology, backpacks, and other lifestyle indicators.
Public sentiment reflects significant support for the measure; an INSCOP Research poll indicates that 77% of Romanians believe introducing school uniforms would reduce discrimination in schools. Conversely, 20.6% of respondents disagree. The poll also noted divided opinions on school readiness, with 45.3% of participants feeling schools are well-prepared for the new academic year, while 45.5% believe they are poorly prepared.
