Romanian students protest mandatory school uniforms

Students across Romania participated in a symbolic protest on September 28, 2026, by wearing black clothing to school. The action was organized by the National Council of Students (CNE) to oppose a legislative project that would introduce mandatory school uniforms in state education institutions.

The CNE argues that the measure was developed without consulting students, who are the direct beneficiaries of the system. Protesters have used the slogan “Education cannot be repaired at a tailor shop,” suggesting that the law fails to address fundamental educational issues such as bullying and social inequality. They contend that social differences will persist through other items like footwear or technology.

The legislative proposal, which has already passed the Senate, is now heading to the Chamber of Deputies for a decisive vote. While proponents, including some PSD senators, argue that uniforms could reduce bullying and social discrimination, student representatives claim the measure is a superficial fix for deeper systemic problems. Education Minister Mihai Dimian noted that if the law proceeds, funds intended for uniforms could potentially be redirected to other educational needs.
