Romania construction volume grows 12% in early 2026

Romania's construction market has reached near-historical highs, with the volume of works increasing by approximately 12% during the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. According to a report by Colliers, the sector remains a key driver of economic growth.

Growth was most significant in the residential sector, which saw a 16% increase, and in infrastructure projects, which rose by about 14%. Infrastructure works, including roads, railways, and hospitals, continue to account for over half of the sector's total activity. The non-residential segment experienced slower growth of approximately 6%, hindered by expensive financing and cautious private investors.

Despite this activity, which is nearly double pre-pandemic levels, the second half of the year faces several risks. These include rising costs, increased pressure on contractors' cash flows, political uncertainties, and challenges regarding the attraction and continued use of European funds.
