A dispute has emerged in Romania regarding the availability of oncological medicines. The Federation of Cancer Patient Associations (FABC) has issued an open letter to government officials, claiming that three oncological drugs are currently missing and eight others face repeated, long-term supply discontinuities. The FABC warns that these shortages force patients to delay treatments, which can lead to disease progression and increased mortality.

In response, Interim Health Minister Cseke Attila has ordered an urgent audit of the medicine monitoring and oversight mechanism. This audit will include the National Oncology Programme and the procedure for issuing Special Needs Authorizations (ANS). The Minister emphasized the need for a digital system to track medicine stocks in real time to prevent shortages before they affect patients.

However, officials from the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) have contested the claim of a crisis. CNAS President Horațiu Moldovan stated that there is no shortage of cytostatic medicines and that stocks remain generally regular, suggesting that any issues may stem from specific production deficiencies. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan noted that while niche imported treatments may experience temporary supply gaps, most patients—over 90%—have uninterrupted access to covered treatments.
