Romania debates religious funding models

A debate has resurfaced in Romania regarding whether religious denominations should be funded by the state budget or directly by their members. Currently, the Romanian state provides financial support to recognized cults, covering expenses such as clerical and non-clerical salaries, as well as the construction and maintenance of religious buildings.

Critics of the current system argue that taxpayers who do not belong to a specific faith should not indirectly fund religious organizations through their taxes. Proponents of reform suggest a model where religious affiliation is actively declared, allowing individuals to explicitly choose which cult to support financially.

The German model, known as 'Kirchensteuer' (church tax), is being cited as a potential alternative. In Germany, members of certain denominations pay a tax calculated as a percentage of their income tax, which is collected by tax authorities and transferred to the religious organizations. Implementing such a system in Romania would require significant legislative and administrative changes.
