Romanian President Nicușor Dan Calls for Deeper US Partnership on 250th Independence Anniversary

President Nicușor Dan published an editorial in the U.S. conservative outlet Newsmax to mark the United States' 250th anniversary of independence. He said Romanians retain strong support for American leadership, including former President Donald Trump, and highlighted historic ties such as U.S. assistance to anti‑communist resistance in the Carpathians after World War II.

Dan outlined plans to expand strategic cooperation, citing a larger U.S. presence at the Mihail Kogălniceanu air base, joint nuclear projects at Cernavodă, development of small‑modular reactors with American partners, a proposed AI gigafactory in Dobrogea, and the modernization of the Port of Constanța as a regional logistics hub supporting Ukraine's reconstruction. He also mentioned initiatives on critical mineral supply chains, the Vertical Gas Corridor and the Neptun Deep offshore gas project to reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian gas.

In parallel, the nationalist AUR party sent a delegation led by vice‑president Dan Dungaciu to Washington, D.C., to attend official commemorations of the anniversary, meet members of Congress and U.S. officials, and reaffirm Romania’s strategic partnership with the United States.
