Romania deploys third firefighting contingent to Greece

Romania has deployed its third contingent of specialized firefighters to Greece to assist in monitoring and extinguishing forest fires. The team departed by road on Sunday, August 30, traveling from the Special Emergency Intervention Unit in Ciolpani toward Nea Makri in the Attica region.

The deployment includes a variety of specialized equipment already positioned in Greece, such as forest fire engines with capacities ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 liters, a 30,000-liter water tanker, a command vehicle equipped with an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), and shortwave radio communications vehicles.

This mission is part of a pre-positioning program organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). Romania has participated in this EU-funded initiative annually since 2022 to support European communities affected by major wildfires. The current Romanian mission is scheduled to run through September 15.
