Romania designates 2026 as the Year of the United States
President Nicușor Dan signed a law on 20 July 2026 declaring 2026 the Year of the United States of America in Romania. The legislation aims to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries by authorising public‑sector bodies to organise conferences, cultural programmes, academic events, public‑diplomacy activities and special media broadcasts that highlight shared democratic values such as freedom of expression, the rule of law and democracy.
The decree establishing the US Year was part of a broader set of legislative actions signed by the president on the same day, which included measures on fiscal policy, digitalisation, infrastructure financing and other regulatory updates.
