Romania designates 2026 as Year of the United States to deepen bilateral ties

President Nicușor Dan signed a law this week that names 2026 the Year of the United States in Romania. The legislation, approved by the Chamber of Deputies with 283 votes in favour, enables central and local authorities to organise conferences, cultural, academic and educational events that promote Romanian‑American cooperation and democratic values. State broadcasters may also air themed programming.

The law has spurred local initiatives, such as the plan by Bucharest’s Sector 4 mayor to create a new park named after Donald Trump, and a series of proposed activities ranging from a baseball match between the New York Yankees and a Romanian team to cultural festivals, city‑twinning ceremonies and promotional events linking Romanian and American traditions.
