Romania diesel tax reductions fail to lower pump prices

Energy expert Corina Murafa has stated that reducing diesel excise taxes has failed to effectively lower pump prices for transporters. She noted that while excise taxes were temporarily reduced by 20% in August and 25% in early September, fuel prices continued to rise due to international market fluctuations, exchange rates, and OPEC+ decisions. Murafa argued that these reductions deplete the public budget without addressing the root causes of inflation, such as Middle East conflicts and oil flow disruptions.

In a related development regarding agricultural support, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development may prepare a scheme where the diesel subsidy per liter for agriculture decreases in 2026. Under the management of APIA, the value per liter would be reduced following the excise tax cuts, though the total budget for the scheme might increase to cover larger quantities of eligible diesel. The final impact on farmers will depend on the specific amount per liter and the total volume of eligible fuel they can claim.
