Romania faces economic decline as investment and competitiveness drop

Romania is facing significant economic challenges characterized by a sharp decline in competitiveness and investment. According to the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, the country dropped 12 places to 61st, falling behind nations such as Kenya and Bulgaria.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) saw a dramatic 77.1% year-on-year decrease, totaling €1.127 billion between January and July. Simultaneously, total external debt rose by €6.416 billion to nearly €235 billion. The country's public debt has also surpassed the 60% GDP threshold, reaching 60.1% at the end of the first quarter of 2026, which triggers fiscal responsibility restrictions.

Economists note that interest payments on this public debt are estimated to exceed 3% of the national GDP. Business leaders cite high energy costs, bureaucracy, and a shortage of skilled workers as primary obstacles to attracting investment. Industrial production and manufacturing output have also shown recent declines.
