Romania faces economic stagflation as GDP falls in first half of 2026

Romania is experiencing economic stagnation and high inflation, a condition described by analysts as stagflation. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the country's GDP decreased by 1.6% in real terms during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, the GDP fell by 2.0% on a seasonally adjusted basis compared to the second quarter of 2025.

Despite the overall contraction, certain sectors showed resilience. The construction sector recorded a 12.3% increase in activity volume during the first half of 2026. Additionally, service production grew by 1.2% in June, outperforming the general trend in the European Union.

On the fiscal front, interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare reported a significant reduction in the budget deficit. The deficit decreased by approximately 37% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, falling from 76.44 billion lei to 48.08 billion lei. The European Commission estimates the annual deficit for 2026 will reach 6.2% of GDP. However, public debt remains a concern, with interest payments expected to reach approximately 60 billion lei this year.
