Romania economic data shows industrial growth and declining household consumption

Recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) reveals contrasting economic trends in Romania. Household consumption fell by 3.1% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, suggesting increased financial pressure on families as they limit non-essential spending.

In contrast, industrial turnover in August 2026 rose by 10.3% compared to August 2025. This growth was driven by the extractive industry, which saw a 35.7% increase, and the manufacturing industry, which grew by 9.3%. While industrial turnover dropped by 13.7% compared to the previous month due to a decline in manufacturing, the year-to-date figures through August 2026 show a total industrial turnover increase of 0.9% compared to the same period in 2025.

Simultaneously, the state continues to fund large-scale sports infrastructure projects through the National Investment Company (CNI). Major ongoing or planned projects include the Nicolae Dobrin stadium in Pitești, valued at approximately 373 million lei, and the Gheorghe Hagi stadium in Constanța, where construction began in October 2026.
