Romania energy sector shifts as solar production rises 42%
Romania is undergoing a significant shift in its energy landscape. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics for the first half of 2026, domestic energy production fell by 2.6%, while solar energy production saw a substantial increase of 42.1%. Other energy sources showed mixed results: hydropower rose by 17.9%, wind by 9%, and nuclear power generation declined by 11.7%. Additionally, household electricity consumption dropped by 11.8%.
To address energy stability and the variability of renewables, the Ministry of Environment has announced a 400 million lei program to fund energy storage batteries for prosumers. The program, managed by the Environmental Fund Administration, aims to ensure a minimum of 400 MWh of storage capacity. Proposed guidelines allow individuals to receive up to 15,000 lei per system (including VAT), with a cap of 1,250 lei per kWh and a maximum financing rate of 75% of eligible costs.
The energy system has faced recent challenges, including the temporary shutdown of reactors at the Cernavodă nuclear plant due to low Danube water levels. Authorities have responded by activating reserve coal units and managing peak demand through voluntary reductions and increased imports to maintain stability.
