Romania Ministry of Education proposes new high school admission rules

The Romanian Ministry of Education and Research has launched a public consultation on new methodologies and calendars for high school admission and national examinations for the 2027-2028 school year.

A major proposed change allows high schools to organize their own admission contests for up to 50% of their approved places, specifically for certain specializations. This mechanism will apply to students who entered the fifth grade in the 2023-2024 school year. The National Evaluation remains mandatory for all eighth-grade graduates, with results serving as a prerequisite for participating in high school contests.

Regarding the 2027 Baccalaureate, the proposed calendar suggests an earlier start, with competency evaluation tests scheduled for April 12-23, 2027, and written exams from June 14-18, 2027. New rules are also being introduced to improve grading accuracy, including automated notifications for teachers if significant discrepancies occur between two evaluators' scores.

Additionally, the 2026-2027 school calendar has been established, with classes scheduled to begin on September 7, 2026, and conclude on June 18, 2027.
