Sorin Costreie proposes reforms for Romanian education system

Romanian Education Minister Sorin Costreie has proposed several structural and academic reforms to the national education system. One primary proposal involves modifying the National Evaluation exam for eighth-grade students. Currently consisting of Romanian Language and Mathematics, Costreie suggests adding supplementary exams in social sciences and exact sciences to better reflect students' comprehensive knowledge.

Costreie emphasized that these changes would not be implemented immediately to avoid disrupting current students; instead, they would be introduced for students entering the fifth grade to ensure they are prepared for the new format. He noted that such changes require consultation with specialists.

Additionally, the Minister advocated for the separation of the Ministry of Education into two distinct entities: one dedicated to pre-university education and another for universities and research. He argued that this separation aligns with European practices and reflects the different legal frameworks already in place for both subsystems.

Regarding other educational issues, Costreie highlighted the problem of overcrowded classrooms, noting approximately 5,000 classes nationwide contain more than 30 students. He also expressed the need for the taxation of private tutoring services to address systemic issues within the school system.
