Romania education staff face new mandatory psychiatric evaluations

New regulations issued by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health now require mandatory psychiatric evaluations for personnel in pre-university education to maintain their positions. While annual medical check-ups are required to establish fitness for work, psychiatric assessments must be conducted every four years, or more frequently if occupational health doctors identify psychobehavioral changes.

In Botoșani, a school has requested 13,500 lei from the local City Hall to cover the costs of evaluating 84 staff members. This highlights the potential financial impact of the new rules on local administrations.

Education unions have clarified that employees should not bear the costs of these mandatory medical examinations. Citing the Labor Code and health and safety legislation, unions emphasize that employers are responsible for funding prophylactic medical services and that imposing these costs on employees constitutes a violation of current law.
