Romania energy sector sees infrastructure upgrades and price volatility
Romania's energy sector is undergoing significant shifts in pricing, infrastructure, and storage capabilities. Electricity spot prices have seen sharp increases across Europe, with Romania experiencing a daily average of 238 euro/MWh and peaks reaching 656 euro/MWh. This volatility is driven by high gas costs and lower-than-expected wind production in regions like Germany.
On the infrastructure front, CET Palas in Constanta and CET Hidrocarburi in Arad have successfully connected to the National Energy System. Additionally, the European Investment Bank is financing the 630 million euro modernization of the Brasov–Sighisoara railway line. To enhance grid flexibility, Hidroelectrica has awarded a 56.5 million euro contract to Synergy Construct for a 64 MW battery energy storage system at Porțile de Fier II.
In terms of market dynamics, Complexul Energetic Oltenia has secured energy sales for 2027 at prices between 752 and 762 lei/MWh. Meanwhile, ANRE has approved a new mechanism to compensate companies for temporary reductions in electricity consumption to support grid stability. Hidroelectrica also announced a planned 13% increase in active energy prices starting October 2026 due to unfavorable hydrological conditions.
