Romania energy prices hit record 1,000 EUR per MWh
Romania's energy market experienced extreme volatility, with electricity spot prices exceeding 1,000 EUR per MWh on July 1, 2023. This record high has highlighted systemic vulnerabilities in the national energy infrastructure and management.
A significant paradox has emerged regarding renewable energy: Romania is exporting cheap solar energy during the day while being forced to import expensive electricity from Bulgaria at night. Experts suggest that insufficient energy storage capacities and inefficient regulatory frameworks prevent the country from fully capitalizing on its growing photovoltaic potential.
In terms of production, Complexul Energetic Oltenia remains a major player, ranking third nationally and providing approximately 85% of Romania's coal-based electricity. While Hidroelectrica holds the top position, the current energy mix is under pressure from increased demand, geopolitical crises, and infrastructure limitations.
