Romania energy sector sees BESS growth and rising wholesale prices

Romania's energy landscape is seeing significant shifts in storage technology and wholesale pricing. Greenvolt Group is expanding its presence in the battery energy storage system (BESS) sector, with its Greenvolt Next division reporting growing interest from commercial and industrial clients. The group currently holds approximately 209 MW of BESS projects in Romania as part of a larger 5 GW global portfolio.

In the wholesale market, Electrocentrale București (ELCEN) has sold 68,745 MWh of electricity for the 2026-2027 winter season on the OPCOM platform. Prices for deliveries between November 2026 and March 2027 reached between 1,005 and 1,082 lei/MWh, exceeding recent market benchmarks. Buyers included Premier Energy Furnizare, E.ON Energie România, Nova Power&Gas, and OMV Petrom.

Economic analysts emphasize that while decarbonization goals remain important, ensuring energy availability and affordability is a prerequisite for industrial competitiveness. The transition to green energy requires massive investment in expensive new technologies to maintain a stable and accessible supply for both households and industry.
