Romania energy sector faces Cernavodă shutdown and Transgaz expansion
Romania is facing energy supply challenges as the Cernavodă nuclear power plant remains offline due to low Danube water levels. State Secretary Cristian Buşoi stated that the plant cannot be safely restarted for at least the next 10 days, with a potential return to service only in mid-October. To compensate for the lack of nuclear energy, the country is relying heavily on electricity imports, which have fluctuated between 1,500 and 2,500 MW.
In infrastructure developments, Transgaz has announced a 10-year, 6.5 billion lei investment plan to expand the national gas transport system and connect new consumers. The company has secured a 300 million euro loan to support these projects and confirmed that its infrastructure is ready to transport gas from the Neptun Deep project.
Additionally, the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has approved new energy production and storage capacities totaling 593.465 MW, primarily focused on storage. Looking ahead, the future government has identified priority projects including Cernavodă reactors 3 and 4, the Mintia and Iernut power plants, and offshore wind concessions in the Black Sea.
