Romania enters Schengen zone amid political and border shifts

Romania became a full member of the Schengen area in January 2025, following nearly fifteen years of waiting. However, despite this integration, regular border checks persist at the Hungarian and Bulgarian borders.

This development occurs as several Western European nations have begun reintroducing strict border controls due to migration crises, terrorism threats, and security concerns. For example, a migration surge in Ceuta involving approximately 80,000 people crossing the Morocco-Spain border led to temporary controls between Spain and Italy.

Domestically, Romania has also navigated significant political shifts. Following a period of crisis, a new cabinet led by Luca Niculescu was confirmed by parliament on October 20, establishing a full-term government. This follows a complex political landscape shaped by the rise of nationalist movements and legal challenges involving figures such as Călin Georgescu.
