Romania expands cancer prevention and screening services

New medical initiatives are being implemented in Romania to improve cancer prevention and early detection for women.

Mioveni Municipal Hospital has introduced advanced imaging technology for breast cancer screening in Argeș County. The facility offers 2D bilateral mammography, which is covered by the National Health Insurance House (CAS) via referral. Additionally, the hospital provides 3D tomosynthesis mammography, which uses high-resolution imaging to identify small lesions, particularly useful for patients with dense breast tissue. These services are led by specialist Dr. Ecaterina Neguț.

In the North-West region, the CLARA program has launched to combat cervical cancer across Cluj, Bihor, Bistrița-Năsăud, Maramureș, Satu Mare, and Sălaj counties. Coordinated by the Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță Oncology Institute and co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus, the project targets vulnerable women from socio-economically marginalized communities. The program provides a complete, free medical pathway including HPV testing, diagnostic investigations, treatment, and monitoring to address high incidence and mortality rates in the country.
