Romania advances energy transition with wind, gas, and storage projects

Romania is undergoing a significant energy transition marked by major renewable and gas infrastructure developments. Rezolv Energy has launched the first phase of the VIFOR wind farm in Buzău County, contributing 192 MW to the grid. This project, utilizing 30 Vestas turbines, is expected to reach a total capacity of 461 MW by 2027 and may eventually include solar and battery storage hybridization.

To bolster energy security, Romania is investing over 800 million euros to expand natural gas storage facilities, including the Bilciurești project. The Neptun Deep project is also anticipated to begin production in early 2027, which could transform the country into a net gas exporter. Additionally, energy storage capacity is projected to reach at least 4 GW by the end of 2027.

However, the sector faces challenges. Extreme drought and low Danube river levels have significantly reduced hydropower production, impacting grid stability. Meanwhile, German companies have expressed strong interest in investing in Romania's solar and wind sectors to support this regional energy transformation.
