Romania Expands Energy Storage with New Battery Projects and Digital Grid Plan

Romanian energy sector leaders say digitalisation of the grid together with large‑scale battery storage can relieve network congestion without costly infrastructure expansion. Softenerg CEO Răzvan Rădulescu told the Energy Strategy Summit 2026 that from 2027 distribution operators will be required to run flexibility auctions, using real‑time software to match production and demand and to employ stored energy during peaks.

Aj Brand announced the upcoming commissioning of four utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems totaling 2,204 MWh by 2027, part of a rapid increase in national storage capacity. Romania's total installed storage rose from about 1,100 MWh in April 2026 to 1,630 MWh (878 MW) by mid‑June, a 500 MWh gain in two months. The EU approved a €150 million support scheme to further develop storage facilities in the country.

Both initiatives aim to improve grid flexibility, lower peak‑price costs for industrial consumers and accelerate integration of renewable generation across Romania.
