Romania expands hepatitis screening and treatment programmes ahead of World Hepatitis Day

On World Hepatitis Day, Romanian health authorities highlighted ongoing efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis B, C and D by 2030. The Fundeni Clinical Institute, together with the Grigore T. Popa Iaşi University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the National Public Health Institute, is implementing the EU‑co‑financed LIVE(RO)3 project, which will train 800 primary‑care doctors, standardise screening methods and launch an electronic system to monitor chronic liver disease screening.

The Maramureș Health Insurance House also urged the public to use free hepatitis B and C tests covered by the national health insurance scheme. Its director, Adrian Mădăraș, emphasised that early diagnosis and fully reimbursed antiviral therapies can prevent severe complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Both initiatives aim to broaden access to testing, improve early diagnosis and ensure rapid treatment for all Romanian patients, supporting the global goal of hepatitis elimination.
