Romania expands psycho‑oncology care and offers free medical tests for seniors in 2026

From 1 July 2026, Romania’s Bihor Health Insurance House will apply new rules for psycho‑oncology services. Only psychologists who have completed at least four months (110 hours) of specialised training, certified by the Romanian College of Psychologists, may provide reimbursed care. Services can be delivered remotely and are limited to a maximum of four sessions per month per patient, with no more than one session per day. The change aims to improve specialised psychological support for cancer patients, although some counties may still lack enough qualified providers.

Starting 1 January 2026, pensioners covered by the national health insurance system will receive free laboratory analyses when they present a referral from a family doctor or a contracted specialist. Oncologic patients with a specific “Monitor 2” ticket receive priority, with results guaranteed within five working days and reimbursement beyond the contracted laboratory budget. Other chronic‑ill patients are subject to available funding and possible waiting lists. Referrals are valid for 30 days (up to 90 days for certain cases) and can be used at any contracted laboratory across Romania.
