Romania expands renewable energy storage with new battery projects

Renewable energy developers are expanding battery energy storage capacity in Romania to enhance grid stability and integrate more green energy.

Renovatio Group and Portugal-based Greenvolt Group are developing the Borzești Energy Storage facility in Bacău county. This 918 MWh battery system, built in cooperation with Chinese producer CATL, is expected to be completed within 12 months. The project aims to store surplus electricity during high solar generation periods for use during evening peaks and provide rapid response to grid frequency fluctuations.

Separately, PPC Renewables is advancing the Zephyr 1 project, a 60 MW/129 MWh battery to be co-located with its existing 120 MW Târgușor wind farm in Constanța. Estimated at approximately €24.7 million, including support from the EU Modernisation Fund, this project represents a shift toward wind-storage hybridization. Unlike solar-focused storage, wind-battery hybrids allow for smoothing unpredictable wind output and managing imbalance exposure.
