Romania expands rural gastronomic points, boosting local tourism and earnings
Romania now hosts more than 700 local gastronomic points, small rural venues that prepare traditional dishes using ingredients from the owners' own farms or nearby producers. These sites can serve up to 15 visitors at a time and collectively generate tens of millions of lei in annual revenue, with individual earnings ranging from a few thousand lei to over 100,000 lei.
The concept, launched in 2018, has accelerated with many new openings projected for 2024‑2025. Buzău leads the country with over 120 points, followed by Hunedoara (50) and Cluj (57). In Alba County, a compiled list identifies 40 such locations spanning the Apuseni Mountains to the Sebeș Valley, each offering regional specialties from soups and stews to pastries and local beverages.
Industry observers note that successful points combine food with a strong sense of place. "If this is combined with a space that has the ‘spirit of the location’, it becomes a hub of information for the whole area and can disperse visitors across the territory," said Teodor Frolu, vice‑president of the Ivan Patzaichin – Mila 23 Association. The growth of these micro‑enterprises is seen as a new driver for rural tourism and a way to sustain local families.
