Romania extends CAEN economic code update deadline to 2027
The Romanian government has extended the transition period for businesses and professionals to update their economic activity codes to the CAEN Rev. 3 classification. The new deadline is March 25, 2027, providing an additional six months beyond the original September 25, 2026, expiration.
Data from the National Trade Register Office (ONRC) indicated that only 37.24% of affected professionals had completed the update by the initial deadline. The extension aims to prevent administrative bottlenecks at the ONRC and avoid disrupting business operations, particularly in sectors like construction, transport, IT, and commerce, where code updates can be complex due to new sub-categorizations.
Until the new deadline, both CAEN Rev. 2 and Rev. 3 codes will function in parallel. The new classification is designed to align with the European NACE Rev. 2 nomenclature for statistical reporting to EU institutions. Authorities are encouraging businesses to complete the process early to avoid a surge in administrative requests near the new deadline.
