Romania faces border police corruption probe and proposed police reform

The Iași Territorial Inspectorate of the Border Police has announced its full cooperation with investigators following a corruption probe by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA). The investigation, which included searches in Iași and three other counties, targets officials suspected of allowing the illegal passage of goods in exchange for bribes. As part of the case, a border police officer from Dorohoi has been placed under 30-day preventive arrest. The institution emphasized its “zero tolerance” policy toward corruption and its commitment to maintaining public trust through legal and disciplinary measures.

Separately, the proposed Mureșan government is planning significant institutional reforms within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The plan includes the phased integration of the Romanian Police, the Border Police, and the operational component of the General Inspectorate for Immigration into a single entity called the National Police. Under this restructuring, the Gendarmerie would have more clearly defined duties, focusing on large-scale public order, protecting special objectives, and assisting state structures during crises, thereby aiming to eliminate the duplication of resources.
