Romania faces delays in military reserve training program

A legislative bottleneck is preventing the implementation of a voluntary military training program in Romania. Although Law 5/2026 was promulgated in January to allow men and women aged 18 to 35 to participate in up to four months of military training, the program has failed to launch due to the absence of a necessary government decision.

The Ministry of Defense prepared the required documentation, but the process has been stalled by a lengthy inter-ministerial review process involving the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice. The transition between government administrations has further complicated the adoption of these normative acts, risking additional delays in preparing the nation's reserves.
