Romania faces economic contrasts in IT&C growth and automotive export risks
Romania's IT&C sector has reached a turnover of approximately 23.6 billion euros, contributing 6.67% to the national GDP. According to ANIS, the sector accounts for 25.6% of the country's service exports and became the leading service exporter in the first seven months of 2025. Despite having nearly 196,000 employees and leading private research and development investment, the industry faces a paradox: domestic technology absorption remains low due to legislative changes and a lack of predictability.
Separately, the World Bank has warned of economic vulnerabilities regarding Romania's automotive industry. The sector represents 17% of total goods exports, with automobiles making up more than half of those sales. Approximately 83% of Romanian automotive exports are destined for the EU, primarily Germany and France. This high concentration makes the industry susceptible to shifts in the European market, such as the transition to electric vehicles and changing consumer preferences. Data shows a 13% decline in Romanian automobile production during the first seven months of 2026.
