Romania cuts industrial electricity use as energy crisis deepens

Romania has been under an energy‑alert state since 1 August after the shutdown of one Cernavodă nuclear unit, a sharp drop in hydro output and low Danube water levels. The government has prepared a legislative amendment that will require any new photovoltaic project to be approved only if it includes attached battery storage. Voluntary demand‑response measures and public appeals by interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and State Secretary Cristian Bușoi have helped reduce evening peak consumption by about 200‑300 MW, roughly 300 MW less than forecasted levels. Large industrial consumers will receive a 24‑hour notice before any mandatory curtailment is applied, while households and essential services are exempt. During daytime, Romania exported 1 000‑1 500 MW of electricity, but at night it has had to import large volumes at high prices. Companies such as steel producer Donalam have re‑planned production to shave off about 8 MW of demand, and the national grid operator Transelectrica reports that the combined voluntary reductions have kept the system stable despite the crisis.
