Romania faces EU scrutiny over integrity law and funding

Dragoş Pîslaru has addressed concerns regarding the “Fritz amendment” and its impact on Romania's access to European funds. He noted that the Directorate-General for Justice (DG Just) within the European Commission has requested clarifications from Romania concerning the integrity law, a move linked to rule-of-law issues.

Pîslaru explained that the Commission acts as a unified body; if DG Just confirms that the amendment violates European treaties, it will inform the Secretariat-General for Reform. This could lead to a negative evaluation regarding the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds.

The Romanian Government has requested the European Commission to accelerate its evaluation. This urgency aims to allow Parliament to correct any treaty violations immediately, ensuring the successful release of the next funding milestone, which is expected to be determined after September 30.
