Romania faces high mortality rates in cardiovascular disease and road accidents
Romania continues to face significant public health challenges regarding cardiovascular disease and road safety. According to data, cardiovascular diseases caused 787 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Romania in 2023, a rate significantly higher than the European average of 313. Elisabeta Bădilă, president-elect of the Romanian Society of Cardiology, noted that the country remains in a high-risk zone for cardiovascular issues.
In terms of road safety, European Commission statistics show that 1,296 people died in traffic accidents in Romania in 2025. While this represents a 12% decrease from 2024, Romania maintains the second-highest road mortality rate in the European Union with 68 deaths per million inhabitants, surpassed only by Bulgaria. This rate is approximately 1.6 times higher than the EU average of 43 per million.
