Romania faces infrastructure disputes over cycling lanes and road signs
Romania is experiencing significant tension regarding its expanding cycling infrastructure and road modernization projects. The rapid increase in bike lanes, largely funded by European Union resources through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), has led to frequent conflicts between drivers and cyclists over road usage and traffic rules.
In some rural areas, such as mountain villages in Hunedoara and Caraș-Severin, bike lanes have been constructed in sparsely populated regions to access EU funding. These paths are often used by locals for agricultural purposes or by livestock rather than for cycling. The national goal aims to develop 3,000 kilometers of cycling routes by 2026 with an estimated budget of 247.5 million euros.
In urban settings like Sibiu, infrastructure upgrades have faced criticism for poor implementation. Residents of Ogorului Street reported an excessive density of traffic signs following road renovations, noting that over 100 signs were installed within a 300-meter stretch, creating significant visual clutter and confusion.
