Romania faces livestock declines and falling oil production

Romania is experiencing significant shifts across its agricultural and energy sectors. According to data from the National Database of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), the country's livestock numbers have seen a major decline over the last decade. The pig population has dropped by over 40% since 2006, reaching 3.1 million heads this year. Cattle numbers have also decreased by 40.9% over the same period, though there was a slight recent increase in cattle counts.

In the agricultural sector, former Minister Florin Barbu noted that while investments in processing have helped reduce the trade deficit by 2%, current funding gaps and tax increases threaten the competitiveness of farmers. He highlighted a 13.9% increase in agricultural raw material exports, attributed to modernized irrigation.

Simultaneously, Romania's energy sector faces challenges as crude oil production fell by over 10% in the first half of the year to 1.1 million tons. This decline, coupled with the cessation of activities at the Petrotel Lukoil refinery due to international sanctions, has led to a 27% increase in petroleum product imports, totaling 1.9 million tons in the first six months.
