Romania faces Pfizer‑driven seizure of air‑traffic accounts

A Brussels court ruled that Romania must pay the full amount owed to Pfizer for COVID‑19 vaccine contracts, estimated at about €600 million. To enforce the judgment, Pfizer initiated a forced execution procedure that led Eurocontrol to block more than 3.4 billion lei and €18.5 million in the accounts of the Romanian air‑traffic authority ROMATSA on 1 July.

The seizure threatens the financing of Romania’s air‑traffic management, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority and the Finance Ministry to seek a suspension of the execution. Officials warned that a suspension of ROMATSA operations could create a systemic vulnerability for national security and disrupt NATO missions over the Eastern flank. The government is consulting lawyers who represented Romania in previous Micula‑related enforcement actions. Analysts note that the move could raise the country’s borrowing costs and affect its credit ratings if investors perceive heightened legal and financial risk.
